Book Reviews of Wise Child

Book Review: Beautifully Written!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wise Child, and is a unique and magical story by Monica Furlong. I can't begin to explain the way it affected me through its glorious array of descriptions and distinctive characters and colorful plot. Wise Child is about a very young girl who's mother, Maeve the Fair, abandoned her to persue other endeavors and who's sea faring father, Finbar, is away. She is therefore left in the care of the 'medicine' woman Juniper. Through the care of Juniper, Wise Child learns the holistic uses of plants and herbs and becomes one with nature and magic. Unfortunetly, Maeve the Fair returns, and Wise Child is forced to make the desicion between living an affluent life with her evil sorceress mother or stay with her new found friend Juniper. When she makes the wrong desicion, she finds herself in terrible trouble. I would definitely suggest this story to anybody, as I have found it wonderfully magical and imaginitive!

Book Review: Furlong definately did her research
Summary: 5 Stars

This story is excellent. Not only is the story entertaining just by itself, but the accuracy of the rituals described as Wise Child learns from Juniper(a doran, the old British word for a wise woman or healer), from the Beltane Feast to the flying ointment, shows that the author knows her stuff about the lifestyle now known as Wicca. One can get the plot of the story from the other praising reviews, but the language and incredible detail that Ms. Furlong uses makes this book all the richer. An excellent book; definately worth the price.

Book Review: All time favorite!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

A friend gave me this book about ten years ago for my eleventh birthday. Since then I've probably read it at least thirty times. Ms. Furlong animates the characters in such a way that they glimmer right off the page. You don't read this book. You see it play out in your mind as if you were truly there. The author has an amazing gift for crating empathy with her readers as well. You actually feel the pain that the villagers' uneducated bigotry causes Juniper and her young apprentice, Wise Child, and feel a great surge of joy as they rise above it.

Book Review: Deceptively Simple
Summary: 5 Stars

Wise Child is one of those books that manages to cross age brackets to provide meaning to anyone with an open mind. THe portrayal of Wise Child and Juniper's lifestyle is not only beautiful but also not far from truth. The philosophy on living that Juniper teaches Wise Child is pacifistic and appreciative of every aspect of living and the influence of this book is very positive and life affirming.

Book Review: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

Usually, I am not a big fan of magic and fantasy books, save "Wrinkle in Time" or the Harry Potter books. But for some reason, when I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I had never heard of it before. I think Monica Furlong possesses a great talent for writing, and I am now hoping to track down a copy of "Juniper" to read. I really, really recommend it!
