Book Reviews of Wish You WellBook Review: An Unexpected Pleasure Summary: 4 StarsI came upon this book by accident, and only started reading it when I had absolutely nothing else in the house. I know Mr. Baldacci's works only from hearsay, as I've grown weary of his genre, the thriller. Since this book promised to be different, I gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did.
This is a very bittersweet tale of a young girl and her brother undergoing a huge transition after their father's death and mother's resulting catatonic state. It's a whole 'nother world in rural Virginia after the bright lights of New York City, and Mr. Baldacci writes it well. As far as life in Virginia goes, you can tell he's been there, done that.
I thought I detected a bit of spiritualistic quality when he wrote about life and death on the mountain. I suspect he's a former Catholic school veteran as am I, for I could sometimes hear the nuns speaking in parts of the narration. Certain sections of his book even provoked a few tears from me, which was a surprise.
As I wrote the author in an e-mail, I am not likely to read anything else he has written. But if I have to read only one book of his, let it be this one. There's sadness throughout, but also some hope, too. Even if it might be predictable, it's still worthwhile.
Book Review: Not my kind of book Summary: 1 StarsBaldacci is my kind of writer but this is not my kind of book. I've read nearly all of his books and thoroughly enjoy his writing but this one was just boring. Maybe well written but not enough to it. If you've read the reviews and the publisher's write-up above, you know the whole book so read one of his others, they're great.
Book Review: Engaging and heartfelt Summary: 5 StarsThis is the first book I have read by Baldacci and I think it is an excellent novel. Firstly, he captures the raw love of mother/son and sister/brother in an expert way - it almost hurts your heart. Secondly, it demonstrates how our true existence is defined by they way we choose to interact with those around us. It was an optimistically kind novel, demonstrating that it does matter when we help each other in times of need and struggle. The characters were deeply engaging and strong. I felt at peace and complete with the entire work. This is a wonderful read. Great work, Baldacci - more like it, please!
Book Review: Not his best, but worthy of a read Summary: 3 StarsI am a big fan of Baldacci as a mystery/thriller author, so decided to check out his side venture in this book inspired in part by his mother's life. I agree with previous reviewers that there are shades of To Kill a Mockingbird and other influences in this novel, and as such, even though inspired by his family's life, it didn't feel like a truly original idea or original characters. That being said, I did enjoy it. It was a fast read and those who may have read other reviews of mine know character development is important to me - I was able to connect with the characters enough to care about the outcome of the novel. Predictable? Absolutely. But, worth a read. Just don't expect the quality of this other novels. This is a complete departure.
