Book Reviews of Wish You Well

Book Review: ABSOLUTELY SUPERB
Summary: 5 Stars

I will spare another recap of this book's plot & cut right to the chase. This book is superb! This is my third Baldacci novel, and I am hooked. I'm not an expert on literature, but I read a whole lot of books, about 3-4 per week. I read this one in two nights, I just couldn't put it down. The characters are fantastic, the imagery is poetic, and the plot is subtle but driving. There is no "slow part" in this book. If you consider yourself a person of depth, you will love every page of this novel. Of all the novels I've read from various genres, this is definitely one of my top five favorites. Read it & enjoy...it will leave you with a very satisfied smile & a nice warm feeling inside.

Book Review: Moved Along
Summary: 4 Stars

As my first summer reading material after 10 months of required reading in school this book was great. I thought it started pretty slow but the last 3rd of the book was amazing and incredibly hard to pur down. I was actually on a plane when I finished the book and it left me in a really good mood with a huge grin. The only reason why it didn't get 5 stars was because it was too slow for the first 100 pages of the book.

Book Review: Absolutely Wonderful!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never read any books by Baldacci, so I had no idea what to expect when I began "Wish You Well". I quickly learned that Baldacci is an amazing writer with the ability to paint a picture with words with ease, and his use of dialogue is second to none. I could practically hear the voices of characters Lou, Oz, Diamond and Eugene.

I won't get into plot because most of the reviewers have already done so. But as a writer myself, I was very moved by the story. It held more suspense than any mystery or thriller book I've read. I also found myself in tears a couple of times in the book. Baldacci got me so involved in the characters' lives.

I loved this book and highly recommend it. I'm now reading my second Baldacci book.

Book Review: Refreshing read
Summary: 4 Stars

I came out of this book feeling good all over, grinning from ear to ear and ready to take on the world. It isn't brilliant writing and the plot is somewhat predictable. It's the characters and the setting that make this book a 4-star one.

The imagery of the Virginian mountains coupled with the people there living their simple life, making a living the way they see fit, the way a lot of us would be better off doing. It gave me that centre, a root, a reminder of what our lives are about.

It's not for anyone looking for something spectacular. But if all book writer were about this, the world would probably be a better place.

Wish You Well
By: David Baldacci
Review by: Emilie, age 13, KY

When a young girl and her brother from New York City are forced to move to the mountains of Virginia with their great grandmother, their lives become pretty interesting. That is what the book Wish You Well by: David Baldacci is about. This book takes place in the rural mountains of Virginia. The book tells about the many ups and downs of their new and exciting lives. As well as all of their adventures with they're new found friends.
Lou is the main character in this book. She is stubborn and hates dresses and other girly things. Lou's not afraid to get into a fight, or much else for that matter.
Oz is her little brother. Oz is practically the opposite, he is afraid of almost anything. But this little boy has a big heart that you will grow to know and love. He believes more than anyone else in this story that things are going to be all right.
Louisa is the children's great grandmother. Louisa is as tough as they come. She'll work on the farm though the whole day, even at her old age. She's tall and slim, but strong. Louisa is very loving of the children and teaches them a lot. She is also very loving of the mountain and the land that it provides for her.
Diamond and Cotton are the other main characters this story. Diamond is a nice boy who befriends Lou and Oz. He shows them all around, and teaches them about the area. He plays games with them and takes them on some wild adventures. Cotton is Louisa's lawyer and also her friend. He is a very kind and gentle man who visits often to keep them company.
There are many other characters in this story like Eugene who helps Louisa on the farm and is also friends with Lou and Oz. George Davis a mean and crazy man who is always causing trouble. And Amanda, Lou and Oz's mom, who everyone hopes will get better.
I love this authors writing style. He describes everything enough for you to get a perfect clear image in your mind, without boring you. Every character is described in a way that makes you feel like you almost know them. My favorite description is of the farm. He describes it as, "The dirt lane nudged over to the north as it cleared a rise. Here the land splayed out into a broad valley of simple beauty. Green meadows were bracketed by vast forests of every wood the state boasted. Next to the meadows were cleared patchwork fields that yielded to split-rail corrals, weathered gray and wrapped with naked rambler rose vines. Anchoring the corrals was a large two-story plank barn, topped by a gambrel roof with rain hood, all covered by cedar shingles fashioned with froe and maul. It had large double doors at each end with a set of hay doors above. A projecting timber was immediately above this portal and used to support the hay fork dangling from it. Three cows lay in the grass in one protected space, while a roan horse grazed alone in a small snake-rail corral. Lou counted a half dozen sheered sheep in another pen. And behind that was another fenced space where enormous hogs rolled in a wallow of mud, like giant babies at play. A pair of mules were doubletrees to a large wooden wagon that sat by the barn, the sun reflecting off its tin wrapped wooden wheels. Near the barn was a farm house of modest proportions."
Lou, Oz their mother Amanda, and father Jack, were driving home from a picnic when a tragedy happened. A man was in the road causing jack to swerve and wreck. He sadly died and Amanda went into a deep coma. The only family that Lou and Oz had was their great grandmother, so them and there mother moved to Virginia where their lives would change forever.
They met many friends like Diamond and Eugene. They also had a few enemies like Garage Davis. They learned to do farm work and had many more chores than they were used to. They had some crazy adventures with Diamond who would surprise them every time.
They find that Louisa's land may be more than it seems, could this be a problem? You'll have to read the book to find out.
This book is not only about a couple of city kids moving to the mountains. It's about how they grow as people and how you need to enjoy every minute of your life while you still have it. This is a great book.
