Book Reviews of Wishful Drinking

Book Review: If you need a stimulus package........
Summary: 5 Stars

Have always loved black humor and skewed personalities and this book does not fail in both respects. Everybody needs a Carrie Fisher in their life.
A very quick read which I have now sent to a friend who was crying the blues. I know that does nothing for a retailer but it was like sending bandages and blood plasma to her. She called and said "May I keep the book" and I said yes because she decided if Carrie could survive all of the craziness and still find the humor in it she could do likewise. Bravo, Carrie. Love your stuff.

Book Review: In and Out, In and Out...
Summary: 5 Stars

...That being how I went in dodging chunks of dry ice and came out turning pages unlike I expected. I always say the most prophetic writers have inherited enormous amounts of pain, which Carrie I count among prophetic writers.

Dark humor?

On this one I can assert with a certain amount of certainty that trying to stifle laughing will not be an option. I don't know how many times I kept saying, "Awl... that's so not fun--" when up from the sternum bursts this uncontrollable laugh that I'm gonna have to argue, was without my consent.

Won't admit just where I laughed, but I will give prospective readers this one little hint--Every Page! Sometimes even twice on the same page!!! The cover, both intriguing and scenic, appropriately sums up for me the tattle-tell of what the grass really must look like on other sides.

Painful observations (for me as a reader). Poignant candor (for Carrie as an author). My rating: 4.5 Stars...

Book Review: Irreverant & Funny
Summary: 3 Stars

Despite the sometimes dark subject matter, Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher is ultimately a light, quick, and humorous read. Ms. Fisher's ascerbic wit and droll humor make reading about drug addiction, alcoholism and depression entertaining. Carrie Fisher is nothing if not irreverant and funny. Wishful Drinking is packed full of hilarious antedotes about some of old time Hollywood's biggest stars as well as interesting tibits such as the fact that she once dated Senator and former presidential candidate Chris Dodd.

It is worth noting that Wishful Drinking can be read in one sitting. It therefore makes the perfect airplane book, but you might want to purcahse it used from Amazon.

After reading Wishful Drinking, you'll wish that Carrie was one your friends so that you could call her up on whim to do lunch as she regales you with tales from her unusual Hollywood upbringing....you would be sure to ask about the Christmas when she was 15 and her mother gave both Carrie and Carrie's grandmother vibrators as gifts!

Book Review: Laughing Through the Awful Stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Hilarious autobiography, taken from the actress's one-woman show. All the juice is in here; personal history with her famous parents (Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds) and their public meltdown over Elizabeth Taylor; her long relationship and short marriage to Paul Simon; her burst of stardom with the Star Wars franchise; but most of all, and overriding all else, Carrie's mental illness. Carrie is bipolar, and was undiagnosed and self-medicating for years and years, which led of course to Carrie being an alcoholic and drug addict. She's now an advocate for electroconvulsive shock therapy, even with the resulting loss of memories that need to be constantly rebuilt. That's not a path for everyone. We all shared this book around the house, and we all laughed out loud. Fisher renders even the most harrowing events of her life with a razor sharp tongue and eye for irony that makes the darkest hours relatable. She's someone I would enjoy hanging out with, crazy and all.

Book Review: Laughing outloud
Summary: 4 Stars

I just did not want this book to end. I am only giving it four stars simply because it is really too short, with pages filled with Hollywood pictures making it even shorter. Carrie is a talented comedic writer and I just want much more.

I found myself laughing out loud so often my husband thought I was telling jokes with someone. To have a book make you burst out laughing is a rarity. I think all I want to do is meet Carrie Fisher now, and have a diet coke. She is my kind of gal.
