Book Reviews of Wishful DrinkingBook Review: Get it on audiobook Summary: 5 Stars
This book is best as the unabridged audiobook read by the author herself! Much like David Sedaris, the only person that can fully convey the emotional impact and placement of emphasis in their experiences, is the author themselves. After listening to this three hour conversation with Carrie, as she does ask rhetorical questions of her reader/audiences, I wondered why she has not reached the level of gay icon status as Cher or Liza. The woman smoked Harrison Ford's dope, she turns men bald and gay, was the daughter of a gay icon (which gives you 10 points automatically), and has her fair share of True Hollywood Story moments - I mean come on! Has your mother given you a vibrator for Christmas, no? Only Carrie? Find out she ended up with a dead gay Republican in her bed...as one does and several other intriguing stories! A new tour of the one woman show also titled "Wishful Drinking" is being planned for 2009, so if you like Margaret Cho, Sarah Silverman, and Kathy Griffin and want to go a bit old school Enquirer - than make it a point to see her live!
Book Review: Glib is An Understatement Summary: 5 Stars
This is the third in an accidental trilogy, but less momentous than Ms Fisher's first two memoirs. While it seems a cathartic over-indulgence about her electroshock therapy, it is ALWAYS in the range of just funny to hilarious.(Her off-the-subject parenthetical mumblings provide the most clever and raucous laugh-out-loud moments and some real insight into Ms. Fisher's wonderfully twisted, sardonic and sarcastic mind).
The oddity is that you learn more about Ms. Fisher's ditzy and funny mom, Debbie Reynolds--a truly warm accounting of life with a uniqely weird movie star, . If anything, you feel that this book is too short for more than two bathroom readings, and leaves you wanting for more...to read, that is. I would highly recommend this book to both my best friends and worse enemies.
Book Review: Good but needs more Summary: 4 Stars
This was a very entertaining book but I wanted to know more about her use of ECT for her mental health issues. The book barely touches upon it and is more filled with her & her family's goings on, which is the entertaining part!
Book Review: Good for multiple laughs Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this up and began laughing almost at the get-go. It's a quick read that lets you know your own messed up family isn't so bad after all. I respect Carrie Fisher's work - particularly her writing but most respect is for the ownership she has on her life.
Book Review: Great Book, Great Service! Summary: 5 Stars
Carrie Fisher is so real, and that's what I love about her! I picked the book up and didn't put it down until I read cover to cover. Wishful Drinking shows how Carrie's sense of humor helps her through situations many of us would find devastating!
Cheers to Amazon for their super service, too!
