Book Reviews of Wishful Drinking

Book Review: disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I was disappointed in this book. I love Carrie Fisher and was excited to read it. But it was hard to follow-just seemed like she was rambling on and on. She told us different stories of her life but with very little detail.

Book Review: Laughing Through the Awful Stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Hilarious autobiography, taken from the actress's one-woman show. All the juice is in here; personal history with her famous parents (Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds) and their public meltdown over Elizabeth Taylor; her long relationship and short marriage to Paul Simon; her burst of stardom with the Star Wars franchise; but most of all, and overriding all else, Carrie's mental illness. Carrie is bipolar, and was undiagnosed and self-medicating for years and years, which led of course to Carrie being an alcoholic and drug addict. She's now an advocate for electroconvulsive shock therapy, even with the resulting loss of memories that need to be constantly rebuilt. That's not a path for everyone. We all shared this book around the house, and we all laughed out loud. Fisher renders even the most harrowing events of her life with a razor sharp tongue and eye for irony that makes the darkest hours relatable. She's someone I would enjoy hanging out with, crazy and all.

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

After Postcards from the Edge, I was hoping for something witty and funny from this writer, but also a little more substantial. I found this book to be none of those. The author's trivializing of painful experiences by forcing them to work as comic one-liners did not work for me. I read it on a plane, and though it held my attention through the flight, it was mostly because I needed something to read.

Book Review: Waste of Time and Money
Summary: 1 Stars

She gives us no details about her life and is constantly jumping from one subject to another. There is only one chapter about her experience with Star Wars and not much detail. She has had a rough life and I do feel sorry for her. It is amazing to have all the success and money but still be so unhappy. The paragraph's are double spaced and has several pictures so a 150 page book is really less than 100 pages. I recommend getting the book from your local library but only if you a diehard Carrie Fisher fan!

Book Review: a bawdy joke between girlfriends
Summary: 4 Stars

Hearing the author tell her story made this a fun audiobook to listen to. Her big personality and enthusiastic speaking style brought her story to life. I'm a fan of her work, as well as her mother's, and I really enjoyed learning more about both. It was like one long, bawdy joke told between girlfriends!
