Book Review: A Welcome Surprise

Not realizing that this book's sequel, Sorceress, was a young adult novel (it was on a shelf in a friend's home) I picked it up on a whim and gave it a try, loved it, then bought Witch Child, which I love even more. Even though it is intended for the teenaged/young adult reader, it is a surprisingly well-written and informative account of a young woman's experience at the hands of an ignorant and paranoid society in colonial New England. Woven throughout with touches of mysticism by way of Native Americans (who are depicted here in fascinating detail), this story of Mary's witchery (is she or is she not a witch?) held me spellbound. I have no children, but would not hesitate to recommend it for teenagers, young adults and even a sophisticated 10-year-old. Or a full-fledged adult such as myself, for that matter. Great history, great writing; a true pleasure to read. If you like this sort of thing, by all means do not miss this one.
