Book Review: Witch Genre Does This Book Belong In?

Abby and her granddaughter, Ophelia, are witches of the good variety. Ophelia is trying to deny her heritage because, four years ago, despite having a vision of her best friend's murder, she was not able to save him. Now living in the small town of Summerset, Ophelia is working as the town's librarian and trying to live a quiet life. No chance of that. Theft and murder are about to descend on the town.
This is Shirley Damsgaard's first novel and also the first in a series of paranormal mysteries starring Abby and Ophelia. It's well enough written, but the opening chapters seem to be too reminiscent of a romantic novel than a mystery. Unfortunately, Ophelia's potential love interest comes across (perhaps deliberately?) more as a potential stalker. In terms of character, the developing friendship between assistant librarian, Darci, and Ophelia, has more impact as the gregarious Darci worms her way into Ophelia's insular life.
Ophelia's disinterest in her psychic and magick skills mean that the other-worldly aspects inherent in these types of story are not explored here to any great extent, but this is only the first novel in the series. On its own terms, as a `cozy' mystery, this is still a reasonably good read marred slightly by the overblown characterisation of the leading male character.
There is enough here to suggest that this could become a very entertaining series, and the second instalment, `Charmed to Death', bears this out as it is an all-round better book.
