Book Reviews of Without Remorse

Book Review: A great book!, A must have in your book shelf!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of Clancy's finest works, and although somewhat less of a "techno" book than his early efforts, a superb read, that introduces John Kellys (now John Clark) background. The book explains how he became a CIA opperative after his time in the navy. As John Clark is probably Clancys most interesting character most people who have read Clancy before will enjoy discovering his rather dark past.

It was daring of Clancy to turn away from his most well known character Jack Ryan, and have Kelly as his leading man, but the gamble seems to have paid off, resulting in a compelling read which is hard to put down.

So as not to dissapoint his most eager eyed fans Ryan can actually be found in the book, having a discussion with his parents upon his choice to join the Marines, and it is Ryans father, a cop, who is investigating the drug ring and then Kelly which is vital to the plot.

The plot is quite good, and probably somewhat more realistic than the world wars that act as the backdrop to most of Clancys novels. As expected the action sequences are brilliant written in true Clancy style, and as the tension builds toward the end of the book you really will not want to put it down.

All in All this is Clancy at his best, and is well worth a read, even if nomally you wouldnt touch a Clancy book. Its good to see Clancy writing as he is best able to do, hyper fast pace, superb action in gory detail, and good character development, rather than endless ramble about Clancys rather conservative political views that spoil some of his -otherwise excellent- novels.

Book Review: A great read
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a great read, period. All of it is possible, sure, there are some really grey areas. All in all though, I do recommed this book. It was actualy the frst Clancy book that I ever read. WR is probably my favorite too, 'though Red Storm Rising gets close. John Kelly/Clark is some to be admired in this book, even if her doesn't really exist is the real world. Great book.

Book Review: A great story
Summary: 4 Stars

This story focuses on John Clark, a change from the usually Jack Ryan stories. Clark is shown in the gritty special ops world that we always new he had in him. Clancy takes Clark and fleshes him out in ways that he was never able to do in previous novels. This story is not a "political thriller" the way that Jack Ryans stories might be called, this is an action story. When you read this hold on for a great action filled twisty-turvey ride.

Book Review: A great vicarious exp. as Kelly (Clark) eliminates bad boys.
Summary: 4 Stars

I enjoyed this book. Clancy contrasts very well the mood evoked by the Chesapeake Bay (for those of us who know it) with that of the mean streets of Baltimore. I enjoyed the 2-level plot, wherein Kelly is dealing with drug-dealing dirt-bags on the one hand, and his mission to Vietnam on the other. The plot was realistic--the professional manner in which Kelly carries out his dual missions was, I thought, very thoroughly thought out and presented. I enjoyed also his portrayals of the American and Russian spooks, and the Russian Air Force colonel. My main complaint with Clancy's writing occurs when he's trying to convey tender love thoughts towards the women in Kelly's life--too much syrup (of the corn type). I don't think that subject is Clancy's forte'. Otherwise, this would make a great movie, as good as "Clear and Present Danger".

Book Review: A guy's love story!
Summary: 5 Stars

What happens when a special forces guy falls in love with a prostitute, who is captured and killed by pimp and his cronies? He takes action "without remorse". Excellent story. You can't put it down until you find out what happens. Great subplot of a rescue mission to 'nam.
