Book Reviews of Women: A Novel

Book Review: Good
Summary: 4 Stars

the book held my attention. it had some really funny and kind of sad parts too. he writes like i would guess he speaks. the c word was used a lot - hope you're not offended easily.

Book Review: Good but not great Bukowski
Summary: 4 Stars

I just finished Women. While there are some hilarious passages, as you'd expect with Bukowski, I don't think this book measures up to Ham on Rye or Factotum (I have not yet read Post Office, which I suspect will be on the level of those two).

The problem with this one is that it's somewhat repetitive -- just an endless parade of nutty, slutty women through the portals of Chez Chinaski. The other books have liberal doses of sex, but also plenty of Bukowski's keen insights into work and school. In Women, most of the non-sex action involves poetry readings, which obviously offers much more limited opportunities for non-sexual observations.

So read Women, since it provides a vivid picture of yet another period of Bukowski's life, but don't judge him by it.

Book Review: Good writing, but not interesting
Summary: 3 Stars

I saw Barfly and didn't like it, and Factotum too for that matter. With so many raves about the author, I thought I should try the books. Now, I can be a misogynist, but the "fictional" accounts of a guy getting drunk and mistreating women is not interesting. It is too much like "real life" going from one episode to another without a real narrative thread holding the book together. Finally it ends, with the character nor the reader having learned anything, or having changed at all. There are so many other talented writers out there, you don't need to waste your time on Bukowski.

Book Review: Graphic. Vulgar. Awesome.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second novel by Bukowski I've ever read following Ham on Rye. This book chronicles the twisted stories and relationships with women that poet and author Henry Chinaski experiences. To say that this book is graphic is nothing short of an understatement, but with that being said I think that the rawness that is yielded in this book is what makes it so compelling. The chance to delve into the mind of such a lazy and self-centered character is irresistible. By the end I felt that I become lost in Chinaski's endless flow of vulgar relationships much in the same way he had. To anyone looking to get into Bukowski or just wanting to peer into the life of a ego-centric sex machine Women is a great place to start.

Book Review: Hilarious
Summary: 3 Stars

This is one of Bukowski's more accomplished novels; it is more layered and truly felt than 'Post-Office,' yet at the same time is does not achieve the ugly splendor of his poetry.

In this little book, Henry Chinaski is chasing women of all things, that is, while he's not chasing booze and notoriety. Having achieved a small amount of fame, he is now able to woo the ladies on command, and the result is extremely sexually graphic and candid.

Many will find Buck's ramblings a tad repetitive (I did at least), though one cannot help feeling that these experiences are real. 'Women' is both funny and tragic; Buck is America's answer to the French Existentialists, albeit without the abstruse meanderings. This novel is a fine accomplishment, though not a classic.
