Book Review: An excellent resource

This is an excellent book for a variety of readers. I use it as the textbook for an upper-level college class on women in music. The class is open to all majors, not limited to music majors, so I have many students in the class that are not musicians. This text offers fascinating readings that can be understood by anyone, not just those with musical knowledge, and it makes meaningful statements about the role of women in musical history as well as their place in history in the broad sense. It allows me to lead class discussions on the musical and social history of women, letting me include all of the members of my class without being too heavy on musical topics. Students with and without musical training are able to understand the key points of each reading and I simply help them with the musical terminology and ideas to deepen their understanding of the experiences described in the text. This is an excellent book with well-planned readings that cover a variety of musical styles. There are readings for every major musical era from the medieval to the present day and a number of nice black-and-white reproductions of relevant paintings or photographs. It is an excellent book that I highly recommend.
