Book Review: A comprehensive study of women in music for all

'Women in Music' is a comprehensive guide suitable for students, scholars, and others who are interested in learning about women's role in music. This book explores how social, chronological, and geographical aspects affect the music of women from as early as Ancient Greece to the present day. Although the book focuses on Western music and that of North America it does address the importance of world music and incorporates ethnomusicological approaches. The opening chapter treats the problem of how women are often treated as a "difference" and the difficulty in incorporating them into history as a whole. The following chapters give an outline of the important female names in music, their place in history, and how the surrounding social conditions affected their output. Why were compositions by Fanny Hensel restricted to private performance by her family, and why has Francesca Caccini's opera written in 1625 - only a quarter of a century after the beginning of opera - been previously ignored? This book is definitely a starting point for a much ignored topic. It introduces you to the world of music by women which, is at least, an equal to that of men. This superb book leaves you wanting to learn and listen to more, whether it be by Clara Schumann or Dolly Parton!
