Book Reviews of Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me

Book Review: Would have been wonderful with a better writer!
Summary: 3 Stars

I was intrigued with the story of this woman who ended up married to not one, but TWO brilliant musicians and complex men in general. The vignettes were interesting, with plenty of detail and insight into the people in her life, but it was all over the place! I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride, going from one timeframe to another.
Also, some of the chapters had quickly listed facts and I felt like I was being rushed through from one time period to get to the next.
All in all, it was worth the read to live briefly in the magical time of Beatlemania and the sixties and seventies, but I can honestly say that this was the first time that reading a book caused me to take motion sickness medication.

Book Review: Very informative
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book because George Harrison was my favorite Beatle when I was growing up. Pattie has always remained elusive but finally she pens a book about her former husbands that is very informative and a page-turner. I really enjoyed this book and I probably will read it again at some point. I thought I was pretty versed in the life of my favorite Beatle and also of Eric Clapton whom I admire also but she brings it all to life and reveals facts that you couldn't possibly know without being very close to these marvelous musicians. I highly recommend this book!

Book Review: Something vs Layla
Summary: 5 Stars

Though panned as a bit dull on first appearance, I enjoyed this because it leaves no question unanswered. You find out why she left George for Eric and why she ultimately couldn't live with either. I'd say she had to wait to write this book so long because she was living in a house owned by Eric for years and he could have taken it back if he didn't care for what she wrote about him. When he finally signed it over to her, out came the book. Looking back, she thinks it was a mistake to dump George, who was unfaithful and had turned into a crank after he discovered India and meditation. But Eric was a drunk and a doper who didn't want her after he got her, wooing her with Layla and all kinds of other nonsense. Eric's new memoir basically agrees with Pattie's about why they broke up. She had a great life and this book makes it clear that she came out seemingly unscathed. Great pop history. Read it!

Book Review: Not quite what I expected
Summary: 3 Stars

I was very excited about reading this book. I have always loved the songs that Eric Clapton had written for Pattie Boyd and was intrigued by the love triangle between them and George Harrison. I did enjoy reading about the exciting life that she led with both men, as well as her life in general during the 60's and 70's. What I did not like about the book was the lack of detail in her stories and her excessive "name dropping". Pattie spends a lot of time naming people that she encountered in her life that were not very significant to the story. I would have preferred that she tell much more about far fewer people. Because of the lack of depth, it was hard to connect with her and that's my favorite thing about books--the connection.

Book Review: George , Eric and Patty
Summary: 4 Stars

For a rock era memoir, this book was entertaining;you might even say quite engaging. However, it is rather shallow at times. Within the span of several pages you can jump in episodes to various locations, different times, different people but all glued together by one big party that was fueled by high octane drugs and booze. I think she puposefully avoided too much scandal by omitting the juicy details. Somehow her one sentence summaries tell the story ; you just have to use your imagination a little bit. As a compliment to EC's Clapton: The Autobiography I found the book interesting but not any more revealing about the ins and outs of the hard times and the good times. When you are drinking and drugging like they did there has to be many more tales that were agreed upon to leave out. Let bygones be bygones I guess. If you lived through the 60's and beyond, the book takes on a sense of nostalia as you can't help but put your own life into the times period. It was a good ride reliving those heady daze. I enjoyed her side of the story, felt in the end that she sort of got screwed over but that is the price you pay sometimes. She was and still is quite the looker. Best of luck to her in her new life without the famous musicians as lovers and thanks for the memories. Recommended for that trip down rock and roll memory lane.
