Book Review: Autobiography of teen years

Christ Staros, head of Top Shelf, uses this brief (32 page) book to describe two passages from his child and teen years. The first covers a span of years, from early grade school through high school. It deals with shyness, nerdiness, and taking control of one's place in social settings - scary stuff for kids, and hard even for adults. The second describes a single event that Staros experienced as an older teen, "The Worst Gig I Ever Had" as a member of a teenage band. Even that had a happy piece in the ending, or at least potentially happy.
Staros engaged a different artist for each of these brief, revealing stories; both artistic styles work well. This isn't a major work, but it could well appeal to readers who outgrew or never really liked the bam-pow action of the superheroes. It expands the graphic literature that's been growing so quickly in recent years: serious and mature (but not "adult"), and following literary styles straddle the split between fact and fiction. I'm looking forward to more in this series.
