Book Reviews of Ygor

Book Review: A classic story retold from a decidedly different point of view...
Summary: 5 Stars

Sure, you've heard this story before: mad scientist decides to play God and reanimate dead tissue and give it life, but you've never heard it from the perspective of his abused, misshapen assistant. Lee Murphy's "Ygor" is a fascinating take on a classic tale. Lee takes a character that's been traditionally relegated to the sidelines and places him center stage at long last in this gothic horror tale. Extremely well-written, meticulously-researched, poignant, and hard to put down, "Ygor" is a wonderful read for a dark and stormy night. This is Lee Murphy's best work yet. Highly recommended. - Sean Whitley, Writer/Director, "Southern Fried Bigfoot."

Book Review: A classic tale told a new way
Summary: 5 Stars

I've enjoyed the many tellings of the Frankenstein story from Boris Karloff to Frankenstein the true story, so I was interested in what Lee Murphy had in mind in retelling this classic. I have to say I was impressed with the path Lee took in having Ygor tell the story about meeting the "good" doctor and the trials and tribulations he had over the four years living and working with him. In the movies Ygor was just an assistant yet in this he is a real person you get to know and feel for. Lee pays great attention to detail in all his books you're actually there experiencing the whole story. This is not just a rewrite of Frankenstein but an excellent addition to the classic.

Book Review: A new spin on a classic story
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so I am a fan of the old Frankenstein movies and when I saw that Lee Murphy had tackled such a classic I was intrigued. I had read his previous books and was curious to see how he would approach a story everyone is familiar while keeping it fresh and interesting.
Lee Murphy used Ygor's voice to relate the events, a bold choice that pays off. We witness the tale from a completely new perspective and gain insight into the mind of a simple-minded yet strangely fascinating character. The novel is much more than a simple horror story although it does have some very vivid and disturbing scenes. It explores the complexity of the human mind and depth of true madness.

Yes, Lee Murphy did it again. He got me hooked and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Book Review: Alas, poor Igor!
Summary: 5 Stars

This poor, deformed orphan, Igor, has some very strong rejection issues going on here, it goes without saying! But his basic goodness overcomes any dysfunction. Igor loves his pet cat, and in the gory blockbuster ending, the evil doctor finds out just how much. In fact, Lee presents the most horrifying version of the cruel, mad, sadistic, sociopathic scientist that I've ever seen on film or paper. The doctor also seems to have been a hard-core alcoholic who suffered heavy-duty DTs at times. There is absolutely no redeeming value to his character whatsoever. The last chapter is gory and really gruesome, but the outcome is really worth reading, even for the weak of stomach such as I. This is the finest work to date of the "Frankenstein" story.

Now, come back, George Kodiak! Maybe a time machine can be invented to transport Igor to the 21st century, and together George and Igor can work to find the Son of Supersloth from "Heretofore Unknown".

Book Review: An intriguing and original retelling of Mary Shelley's infamous horror novel
Summary: 5 Stars

Why would anyone follow Dr. Frankenstein through his insane experiments? "Ygor" takes a look at the man who stood behind the evil genius and helped him finish his work. An in-depth portrayal of the character, "Ygor" breathes life and soul into the man who has become a icon for the mad genius' sidekick. An intriguing and original retelling of Mary Shelley's infamous horror novel, "Ygor"is well worth the read.
