Book Reviews of You Can Read AnyoneBook Review: Don't buy this book if you really want to learn about this stuff. Summary: 1 Stars
This is yet another "buy-this-to-get-the-secrets" book aimed at corporate America, exploiting that mainstream desperate, competitive edge. But when examined closely, this book really doesn't give you any helpful tools to use in the social arena of reading others' sincerity; it is anecdotal, non-rational, and provides examples that are too narrow and templative to provide a deductive understanding of this concept. There are no photos at all, only insets of anecdotal fictions used to describe what the author says you should do. It amounts to an poser's list of conversational phrases and maneuvering tactics to bludgeon out responses from other people, and will just make you look like the confrontational equivalent of a Stephen Covey geek.
If you really want to learn how to perceive non-verbal stress, self-doubt, insecurity, etc., if you want to learn the *gestures* that exhibit these things, buy the book "What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People." It is full of photos and it describes the underlying instincts causing all of them. Needless to say, it also has a more substantial and academic bibliography.
Book Review: Don't buy this book!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I was very disappointed with this book, actually I never read more than few pages, although I tried again and again to read it. The writing style is very boring, and the actual content is very far from what it promises. My advice, don't buy this book, save your time and your money.
Book Review: Excellent Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I never give a 5 to any book, but after reading some of the bad reviews here I had to make up for them by adding the one extra star.
Here are some points that I wanted to point out:
This book is well organized all the way to the conclusion.
Dr. Lieberman's angle at keeping the Psychology aspect simple was good
enough for a simple person like myself.
I have used some of the techniques in this book at work and in normal
everyday live, and THEY WORKED.
I definitely leanrned more about myself and about other people and
this is coming from someone who reads a lot of books btw.
I am going to read this book again (going over my highlights of crouse)
Definitely recommend this book to anybody including Supervisors,
Coaches, etc.
Excellent Book!
Book Review: FIVE STARS--THE BEST BODY LANGUAGE BOOK FAR AND AWAY Summary: 5 Stars
I've been in law enforcement for 17 years and teach techniques on interviewing and lie-detection. This book ranks as my #1 go-to guide and I suggest it for anyone who wants to learn how to read non-verbal behavior.
You Can Read Anyone is a cut above the other body language books, because Lieberman devotes a lot of the book to techniques that are far from the basics. You won't find any "If she crosses her arms, it means that she is guarded" stuff here. It's a lot smarter than that. A whole lot smarter.
I would have given it 4 stars, because some of the techniques are highly sophisticated, and while they are extremely accurate, not everyone is going to be able to learn how to do them. BUT, the it deserves a 10 star ranking.
There's so much here for anyone, at any level, particularly professionals.
Book Review: First part good, second part not Summary: 3 Stars
This is a book that helped some. The first section was good in learning to ask the right questions to discover truth. It provided some good insight in how to approach a difficult topic in an indirect way. In learning these skills, you can learn how to deal better with church politics and read people better in working in the church system. The second part of the book, promised a lot but did not deliver. It dealt with the chart of low-high self-esteem and low-high ego. The author says that by understanding the other person's ego, you will be able to read the person and situation better. I am not sure about this, but the first part was worth the book.
