Book Reviews of You Can Read AnyoneBook Review: First third= fantastic. The rest= not so great Summary: 2 Stars
The first 68 pages, were incredibly informative, and I learned a lot of things, that I had not read in many other books of the same genre. Other books tell you how to read body language, this book tells you the questions to ask so you can properly read that body language, and what follow up questions to ask, and how to ask them, with a little bit of statement analysis thrown in.
But the last two thirds of the book seemed like a gray mess with some filler fluff thrown in. One example is where Dr. Lieberman helps you to determine if someone really wants to help you. Here is his suggestion: Ask that person to help you. (how sly is that!) If they help you, they wanted to help you all along. But if they do not help you.....wait for it.... they never wanted to help you at all. Wow, very insightful.
At the end of the book he attempts to bring it all together on personality profiling, but then throws everything out the window in the examples when he inexplicably adds outside variables. Basically saying, with the information I gave you, you could guess a little better than before this book, but unless you know every detail of the person you are profiling, it's just a crap-shoot.
And maybe it's just me but with these kinds of books, I am looking to learn, not be entertained, thus I am looking for more of a structured learning format. I am not saying this is rocket science, but the format he used to explain things was kind of sloppy. I think the failure in the book lies not with Dr. Lieberman, but with the editor. Most of the information is good, but not laid out very well at all.
I will say that the first 68 pages are worth buying the book, but it would be my suggestion not to bother reading the rest. And so, I find it hard to rate a 179 page book 5 stars when only 68 of them were very useful.
Book Review: GREAT BOOK , A MUST HAVE Summary: 5 Stars
IT IS A MUST HAVE HE WILL MAKE YOU SEE PEOPLE DIFFERANTLY .
IM LOOKING IN TO BUYING MORE OF HIS BOOKS AFTER READING THIS ONE
Book Review: Good Book Summary: 3 Stars
I enjoyed this book, and would recommend it. It discusses as much about looking at ourselves as how to read other people. This book will not make someone an expert at reading people, it simply gives the reader insight on how its done.
Book Review: Good Read Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book. Thought it had some useful tidbits, but I wouldn't say that it could be easily applied in every situation. I think you'd have to practice and know your "audience", before applying some of his logic.
After reading this book, I know I've had someone apply one of these principles to me at one time. I'm a fairly open person and I wish they would've come right out and asked me instead of me "reading them" and what they were trying to get at. Of course, not everyone is as open, so these tips may help in discovering another person.
Book Review: Good Theory, but Always Requires Context Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit that if this line wasn't in the book, I would have likely rated this book lower:
"Does this mean you will be able to read anyone with perfect precision, every time? No. The system is not 100 percent foolproof. However, you will gain a definitive statistical advantage in every encounter."
The theory mentioned in this text is sound, but without a good grasp of the context of a situation, the information here is useless. It's important to understand how someone is, the experiences that affect them, and the context of the situation (formal vs. informal for example) so that reactions can be gauged properly.
Another warning about this book: Some of the examples are unclear without a conceptualization of the context, and without a firm grasp of the concept being discussed. It's not unusual to need to reread sections of the book and (to an extreme) ask questions.
As far as who I would recommend this book for... Although the title of the book makes it sound ideal for everybody, it really takes both intelligence and a good character to apply the techniques properly and accurately. When I say good character, I mean someone who is good at avoiding the pitfalls of human nature, such as egotism. Keep in mind that this book is based on Psychological principles, some of which we ourselves are subject to and that can intefere with our ability to use the methods defined here effectively.
